Cocoa
There’s nothing sweet about this one. Climate change means cocoa is increasingly harder to come by. Much to the devastation of anyone with a sweet tooth. But it doesn’t end there.
Millions of farmers in West Africa and other regions depend on cocoa for their living income. Which means this cocoa crisis isn’t just impacting desserts, it’s impacting livelihoods.
Coffee
Our morning caffeine fix is in serious trouble. Rising temperatures and unpredictable weather patterns are seriously impacting coffee-producing regions. By 2050, around 50% of these regions could be completely unsuitable for growing the beloved coffee bean due to rising temperatures.
Mango
Mangoes are a tropical fruit, making them very susceptible to the effects that climate change has on temperature and weather patterns. Hot, unpredictable weather is making it hard for mangoes to get the water they need—and hard to grow in general.
Pistachio
Pistachios might start to disappear from your pastries and pizzas. The rising temperatures, weather patterns, and altered pollination cycles caused by climate change are making things a little crazy for everyone’s favorite nut.
Strawberry
Strawberries are another fan favorite fruit that’s at risk due to climate change. In addition to stable growing conditions, strawberries also need a certain amount of “chill time” to thrive. And chill time is hard to come by when the planet gets hotter and hotter every day
VANILLA BEAN
This classic flavor might not be around forever. Farmed from a subtropical orchid, vanilla requires very specific growth conditions and depends on pollination distribution from bees and hummingbirds. All of these factors are influenced by climate change, making vanilla increasingly difficult to harvest.
